DRAWING AND SELF DIRECTED STATEMENTS

DRAWING STATEMENT

My drawing work has started with a strong interest in people and society, therefore the first stage was merely based on observation, I spent a big amount of time walking down the streets observing people and taking photos of them, but trying not to be seen because I did not want my presence to interfere with their natural habitat, I was asking myself questions like where are they going, what are they doing, why did they choose their clothing or who are they talking to.

I recorded all that information as photos but I also took many notes about the things that those people were expressing to me with what they were doing.

My work is all about creating images based on that experience that I had in the street, I depicted just those things that I found really interesting and eye-catching to me and what I have done is interpret them using my own language, adding a touch of humour, i have had references such as Martin Parr, Brosmind or Keith Haring and also street art in general.

Those first drawings were mainly focused on physical appearance and culture but then my practice developed another way, I was still interested in people but I was paying attention to their thoughts and emotions, I made the last pieces in foam board thinking about this idea, the complicated world of the brain, connections and hectic emotions.

It was all about conveying sensations creating something visually attractive and playful although at the end of the day it was, and it has always been, about depicting people and their lifes.

SELF DIRECTED STATEMENT

My work is strongly based on people and society, it consists of two main ways of expression: photography and painting.

Since the beginning I have been fascinated by people and the way they act, so I spent a big amount of time observing people in the streets and collecting information about them, I wanted to merely observe and take photographs of them but without been seen because I did not want to interfere with their natural habitat, i was asking myself questions like where are they going, what are they doing, why did they choose their clothing or who are they talking to, at this stage I was really influenced by artists such as Martin Parr or Cartier.

But there was another thing calling my attention and they were plants. I realized I am always noticing them everywhere I go and I wanted to capture them too, as they are part of our world and they are alive as well, I was fascinated by the variety of textures and how rich that world is, my work shows it and wants people to realize where they really live.

Taking the artist Maira Kalman as other of my references, the motor of my work has always been “walk”, going out there and let people, colours and shapes surprise me, forcing myself to really look at things and capture them with the camera, the end product is a duality between two different views of the same world and how each one of them relates to the other.

The latest works are playing with the same idea but using another media, this time painting; for the people I focused on depicting their mood and for the plants I combined sketches that I did outside taking into account the composition but keeping it fresh and alive, depicting their mood as well.

As can be seen my work is all about portraits, it pays attention to the individuality of each thing in this world, since absolutely everything has his own characteristics but it also refers to us as a whole, as a society.

Drawing final pieces

The last things i have been doing for drawing were bigger drawings, most of them in foam board and all of them were expressing the images that we have on our brain, conections, thoughts and feelings, it was another way of depicting the human being but paying attention to what he is and not how he looks like.

We are complicated and i wanted to make that noticeable through the drawings, i wanted to convey sensations so i paid a lot of attention to the different effects that you can create with lines.

Illustrations for drawing

I started the drawing project focusing on people and observing them, that way it was very connected to the self directed practice.
In this stage of the project i played with different styles and ways of approaching illustration, they all have a humorous background and are mainly focused on society in general, the way we are as a whole, later i developed this ideas focusing more on each of us as individuals, the thoughts and feelings that we have.

Drawing sketchbook

Along this time i have been doing a sketchbook for drawing, i have been scrawling my ideas and future projects but mostly what i have been doing is trying to draw like some important illustrators and cartoonists, i wanted to see if i am able to do that and it was a good way to retain information and understand some basics of drawing, as well as practicing lines.

Self directed paintings

Besides the photos i also did paintings because i wanted to interprete what i have been seen in the long walks i took and basically all the information i have been gathering, i would say the photographs are the main body of work but to me it was essential to add my experience in a more direct way.

I portrayed these people the way i felt them, using the colours i feel were appropiate for their mood and general feel and with the plants i just wanted to keep everything very simple, fresh and playfull, actually they are sketches i took in a park but later on i combined them to create a painting capturing the general picture of the place.

Self directed photographs - II

They are alive like us, we are sharing the same world and we are very close to each other, then why are we so different? i decided the other part of my project will be focusing on plants because it is something i´m always paying attention to and i think most of us don´t really notice them, we are too focused on our bussiness and we don´t look arround us to see the world we live in.

I explain better the content of my project in the STATEMENT which is located in the portfolio page of the blog.
